We started in 1981, when several UK water companies came together at the Thirsty World Conference. Determined to find a solution to a global crisis that had left billions without water, toilets or hygiene, the idea for WaterAid was born. We’re determined to make that happen within a generation – and we believe the best way to do it is by working with others.
That’s why we’re part of an active global network. Advisors, debate shapers, policy makers, engineers, campaigners and fundraisers – all of us here at WaterAid are working towards a common goal: getting water, toilets and hygiene to the millions of people still living without these basic human rights.
By working together, we can enable entire communities to unlock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good. Diena in Mali is one such community, where a women’s group producing soap and shea butter helps women like Kadidia (above) make money for her family and gives her some financial independence. It’s possible because of access to clean water – but there is still a way to go in making sure everyone, everywhere has the same. We change millions of lives every year, working in 28 countries to provide clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. Our work is supported by offices in the UK, US, Australia, Sweden, Canada, Japan and India.
